William McGirt won the Jack Nicklaus hosted Memorial Tournament sponsored by Nationwide at Muirfield Village in Ohio, beating Jon Curran on the second hole of a playoff. It was his first win on Tour for the South Carolina native, playing Srixon ball and irons and Cleveland wedges. Another first time winner, Daniel Berger from Plantation, Florida won the FedEx St. Jude Classic at the Ron Pritchard designed TPC Southwind course near Memphis, Tennessee. Naval Academy 2004 graduate Billy Hurley III won the Quicken Loans Championship hosted by Tiger Woods at Congressional Country Club,for his first win on TOUR, where they salute our service men and women every year. How appropriate-Go Navy!
How about the 116th US Open, played at historic Oakmont Country Club, considered one of the toughest golf courses in the country with 210 bunkers. Congratulations to Taylor Made Ambassador Dustin Johnson on his first major win, showing his fortitude and mettle in Pittsburgh,’ Steel City’, Pennsylvania. Congratulations DJ- I knew it was going to happen.
Scott McCarron won the Principal Charity Classic at the Wakonda Club in Iowa for his first win on the PGA TOUR Champions at age 50. Bernhard Langer made his final putt on #18 at Philadelphia Cricket Club to avoid a playoff and win the Constellation Senior Players Championship for the third consecutive year. With his son Sam on the bag, Kirk Triplett won the inaugural Family Insurance Championship at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin with Steve Stricker as host.
Anna Nordqvist of Sweden won the ShopRite LPGA Classic on the Donald Ross designed Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Resort, winning in consecutive years. 18 year old Canadian Brooke Henderson won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, shooting an unheard of 65 in the final round to tie Lydia Ko and then birdieing the first hole of the sudden death playoff at Sahalee Country Club in Washington State. Sei Young Kim from Korea won the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan defeating Carlota Ciganda in a playoff at historic Blythefield Country Club. Lydia Ko did it again, winning the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship at Pinnacle Country Club with a final round course record 62, proving why she is #1 on the LPGA.
Greenbriar’s Old White golf course was inundated with flood waters causing irreparable damage so the PGA TOUR cancelled the Greenbriar Classic scheduled for July 7-10th. Have no fear, the Scottish Open will be played the same weekend with coverage by Golf Channel, and analysis by Scottish PGA Professional and Golf Channel Academy Lead Instructor Kenny Nairn. Check it out, Kenny has been in Central Florida long enough to Americanize his bonnie Scottish brogue, so you will be able to understand what he is saying.
